As this image is displaced by an addition to The Gallery, the following records what was said about it when it was exhibited:
‘This is the second collage of this sort I produced in mid-later 2014 – the first became my Christmas card at the end of the year. It might look a mess but it was actually tightly controlled in the making as the layers and colour were built up on a firm base of white gesso on wooden board. It took some time too. One day, when it was thoroughly dry and I was beginning to think it was finished, a moment of high risk inspiration came out of nowhere: I took my Stanley knive and carefully but deliberately slashed through the hard matrix of materials along what I thought were meaningful lines in artistic terms. Maybe it has not worked but I find this an interesting creation to which a 2D image does less than justice. It has a 3-D quality and is full of tangible textures as well as shapes and colours, and I intend to work more on such collages once I have assembled appropriate materials.’
